Lots of Android tablets coming (2)

Huang also touched on why a tablet design is better than a laptop for many applications. "Open your notebook. [Inside] it's got heat pipes, and fans, and heat spreaders, lots of copper. You're going to get rid of all of that," he said. Generally, this results in lighter products with longer battery life.

And what's the fate of notebooks and Netbooks? "By being able to connect a wireless keyboard and mouse--the difference between a tablet and notebook is pretty marginal," he said. "[Tablets] will be quite disruptive to notebooks and entry-level desktops," he said.

Huang also waxed eloquent about tablets during the company's earnings conference call. "Our tablet and phone business is going to ramp. And it's going to ramp hard. The amount of activity in our Tegra business is simply too great right now. Come the beginning the [next] year is when you'll see what we have been so busy working on," he said.

"This isn't a fad. Everybody's building tablets because it's just so important. Car companies are working on tablets, consumer electronics companies are working on tablets, computer companies are working on tablets, and communications companies are working on tablets. The medical industry is working on tablets," he said during the earnings conference call. "I don't remember in the history of computing [when] a singular device is being worked on by all of the industry."

just don't see how they are going to catch up. Apple can already count on making 10s of MILLIONS of iPads. Estimates are running between 40 and 50 million iPads for 2011. The other OEMs can't make that bet, especially because they are all competing against each other for mindshare, telco subsidies, retail space, marketing dollars, developers and components and this fragmentation is going to be their undoing in the tablet space.

And this time Apple isn't playing the telco subsidy games where the true cost is hidden. In fact, Apple is totally marginalizing the telcos with the iPad. Note how Apple intro'd the iPad in China--with no telco!

Who would have ever thought that Verizon would be selling iPads without a CDMA chip or a two year subscription?!! That would have been crazy talk a couple of months ago.

And what's an Android Tablet dev supposed to do. Develop for the Tab? Wait for Android 3.0. Or is Chrome the Android tablet Messiah? And should they optimize their apps for a 7 inch screen? 5 inch? 10 inch? 9 inch?

With cellphones, these guys could just slap Android into their next product which was going to be produced with or without Android. And the artificial and real telco barriers shielded them from competition with the iPhone and each other and their confusing array of models. With slates, they have to start from scratch. There was/is no next model because there is/was no first model that has ever had any success.online wholesale electronic

The fact that the Android OEMs have to offer a 7 inch model with subsidy to compete with Apple's 10 inch model without a subsidy is simply stunning.

I'm telling you, Apple is bringing every bit of their marketing, economies of scale, manufacturing, retail network, developer, ecosystem savvy to bear on the slate market. And they can do this better than anyone else because they now have four major product lines all sharing the same OS, apps, development costs, ecosystem and hardware components--iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and AppleTV. And BTW, AppleTV is selling better than anything else in that category.
